Have a Say in What I Write – NaNoWriMo

It’s almost that time again, National Novel Writing Month. This will be my third year participating and I’m pretty excited about it. This year I’ve decided to do something a little different, since I’m a gamer, and most of my readers here are also gamers (I would think) I am going to give you guys the power to decide what I’m writing about. The first year I wrote, I did a fantasy book. It wasn’t that great. In fact, it sucked. Last year I wrote non-fiction and really enjoyed it. This year – it’s up to YOU.

What I need is for anyone who has a few seconds to leave a comment with the following: What game would you like to see me write about my character’s daily adventures in. It can be absolutely any game even if I don’t currently play it – for the month of November my character will come alive and dance off of the pages in a 50,000 word story. I’ll post my progress on this site on a special section for anyone interested to read. Every single action written will be something that occurred in game. Hopefully enough goes on for me to write 50,000 words, and hopefully my readers here volunteer a game that has something I can write about! The game mentioned the most in comments will be the one I go with. If I get no comments I’ll just randomly select one out of a hat. I know this may be a completely hair-brained idea but I’m pretty excited about it. Especially since NaNoWriMo is just around the corner and I won’t be doing any real preparation ahead of time.

On that same note, I AM also looking for a few more sponsors for this great charity. You can find a sponsor me link here on my profile on the NaNoWriMo site. I’m not trying to raise that much money, but every little bit helps. It motivates me to keep writing throughout the month of November, and if my gaming posts are sparse, well now you’ll know why!

Happy gaming (and writing) no matter where you find yourself.

I think you should plan what you write around what will make the challenge easier to stick with. Writing a novel in a month is hard enough, without doing sci fi when it’s not your thing. After all, how far did my attempt get last year :/

I want to hear more about your girlie in LotRO! :D

  2. Hampooj says:

LotRO, cause Eve would be silly. Also; hobbits.

  3. stargrace says:

My own vote is going with LotRO =D But we’ll see where I’m at on the 31st of October regarding votes.

  4. Cameron says:

Currently enjoying LotRO myself, so a story from LotRO would be great!

  5. Blue Kae says:

I was trying to be funny and suggest a game you haven’t played yet, but I can’t think of one. Sooo, I’m going to say LotRO.

  6. Dril says:

    EQ2. Spaceships are so blegh.

  7. David says:

EVE Online should definitely be the Universe in which you write your story in. Or at least have loose ties to.

  8. Niall says:

    EQ2 if you please

  9. Stropp says:

I agree with Scopique and Akely, Eve would be my choice. I also second the idea to keep Eve as the setting.

BTW, are the earlier Nanowrimo entries available anywhere to read? :)

  10. Bob says:

You should pick the game you’re having the most fun with. I realize that changes frequently for you, but it will produce the best journal if you go with something that you’re having fun with. I would also suggest that you shouldn’t be afraid to change if your first choice doesn’t go well and you’re in week 2 and 10k behind if you start over.

  11. Pennie says:

    I’ll vote for LotRo.

Or eq2, if you’re gonna figure out what that mystery letter was about.

    But mostly LotRo.

  12. Akely says:

I agree with the EVE suggestion. I’d be so bold as to make a few pointers. Stay away from doing “fan fiction”. Do write a story that is about people, making the EVE world just the setting.

I’ve always wondered what kind of idiots that put them inside the EVE ships, opting out on (human) life as we know it.

  13. Olphas says:

EQ2 would be my suggestion for you :)

  14. Scopique says:

I’d like to see more EVE stories. I think there’s so much back-story content already out there from CCP, and aside from other fanfic, there’s only 2 novels that I know of.
